Therapeutic Writing for Adults
Throughout the ages, storytelling has been an integral part of the human experience. It’s our way of exploring pains, joys, fears, and triumphs.
Therapeutic writing is the exploration of personal themes, metaphors, and experiences through writing. During a session, a therapist may explore with the client pieces of writing or verbal storytelling - extracting themes and metaphors that mean something to the client. Between sessions, a therapist may ask the client to keep a journal (either written or recorded), to keep notes or to do prompt-based writing. There is no need for prior writing experience, and all are welcome to reach out, regardless of writing or verbal ability.
How can therapeutic writing help me?
Therapeutic writing has been found to be beneficial for many areas of psychotherapy and healing. For example:
Grief and loss
Trauma, stressful life events
Emotional wounds
Self-compassion, self-image, self-esteem, self-worth
Anxiety and depression
Finding a therapist who can navigate our innate sense of creativity, who can help us explore the deeper structures and processes of our lives, and who can offer a compassionate and nonjudgmental space to explore difficult feelings and thoughts is an important component of therapeutic writing. As someone who is trained, who has lived experience, and who genuinely enjoys the process of storytelling/writing, I can offer therapeutic writing as a way to heal - to let the pen fly and to find ourselves amid the chaos.
